Vocab Lab™ 🗣️

The language shift that changes how you're perceived in every interview, email, and meeting

The way you describe your work is the difference between getting screened out and getting screened in. Recruiters don't see tasks — they see keywords. This is where you learn the translation. 🤎

Gov Career Hub™ 🏛️

No one can teach this like someone who's actually in it. The federal career system — decoded.

The federal government is one of the most stable, benefit-rich career paths available — and Black women are wildly underrepresented in the upper grades. This hub teaches you the system so you can move through it strategically, not by accident. 🤎

GS Grade Scale — Your Roadmap
GradeTypical RolesSalary Range (2024)Your Path
YOU Your current grade TARGET Where you're going
Federal Resume Rules
📄
Federal resumes are LONG. 3–5 pages is normal. They need to prove specialized experience — not just list duties.
🔑
Mirror the job posting exactly. Copy keywords from the announcement directly into your resume — the system scans for them.
⏱️
Hours per week matter. Include "40 hours per week" for every job. Part-time experience is calculated differently.
📊
Quantify everything possible. "Processed 150+ claims weekly" beats "processed claims" every time.
🎯
Apply to ladder positions. GS-7/9 often ladder to GS-11/12 without competing again — look for "career ladder" language.
Glossary — Federal Career Language
TIG — Time In Grade. You typically need 52 weeks at your current grade before promoting to the next.
Series — The occupational family. 0301 = Misc Admin. 2210 = IT. 0343 = Management Analyst. Your series determines what you qualify for.
Specialized Experience — The specific duties that qualify you for a grade. This is the most important part of your application.
Career Ladder — A position that promotes automatically (GS-7 → 9 → 11) without competition. Highly valuable — apply for these first.
USAJOBS — The only official federal job board. Set up email alerts for your target series and grade.
TSP — Thrift Savings Plan. Your federal retirement account — equivalent to a 401k. Contribute from day one.

Salary Leverage Lab™ 💰

Too many women accept the first offer. Never again.

Negotiation Scenarios

They give you an offer below your range

Never accept the first number. Thank them, then counter.
"Thank you so much for this offer — I'm really excited about this opportunity. Based on my research and experience, I was expecting something closer to [your number]. Is there flexibility there?"

They say the salary is "fixed"

Pivot to total compensation — benefits have real dollar value.
"I understand the base is set. Can we discuss additional PTO, a signing bonus, remote flexibility, or an earlier performance review? I want to find a way to make this work."

For federal positions

Federal salaries have steps. You can negotiate your step within the grade.
"Based on my years of specialized experience, I'd like to be considered for Step 5 or higher within the GS-9 grade. My background in [X] directly aligns with the requirements."

Recruiter Mode™ 👁️

Learn to think like the person deciding your fate. It changes everything.

The 6-Second Scan Test

A recruiter spends 6 seconds on your resume before deciding to read more or move on. In those 6 seconds, can they clearly see:

If you checked all 5 — your resume passes the scan. If not, go to Resume Repositioner™ to fix it.
Why Recruiters Reject Resumes
No measurable results. "Helped customers" tells them nothing. "Resolved 95% of customer issues on first contact" tells them everything.
Wrong keywords. ATS systems scan for exact words from the job posting. If you say "phones" and they wrote "inbound communications" — you're screened out before a human reads it.
Responsibilities, not accomplishments. Listing what your job was ≠ showing what you achieved. Recruiters want impact, not a job description.
Weak or missing summary. Your top 3–4 lines are prime real estate. Most people waste them on generic phrases like "results-driven professional."
Not tailored to the specific role. One-size-fits-all resumes show recruiters you didn't bother to understand what they actually need.

Hidden Job Market 🔑

The best jobs are filled before they hit the board. Here's how to get there first.

"70–80% of jobs are never publicly posted. They're filled through referrals, internal moves, and recruiter relationships. If you're only applying to posted jobs, you're competing for 20% of the market."

01

Internal Mobility First

The easiest promotion is inside your current agency or company. Build relationships, express interest, and apply to internal postings before looking outside. Managers advocate for people they already know can do the work.

02

Referrals Are the Cheat Code

A referred candidate is 4x more likely to get an interview. Ask former colleagues, mentors, or anyone who knows your work to refer you — before you apply cold. One warm introduction beats 50 cold applications.

03

Reach Out Before They Post

Connect with hiring managers and IT leads on LinkedIn before roles open. Comment on their posts, add value, introduce yourself. When they need someone, you're already on their radar.

04

Government Job Alerts (Set These Today)

Go to USAJobs.gov → Create Account → Set up email alerts for your target series (2210, 0343, 0301) and grade (GS-7 through GS-11). Get postings the day they open — many close within 5 days.

05

LinkedIn Optimization

95% of recruiters use LinkedIn. Your headline should say exactly what you want — not what you currently do. "IT Specialist | Security+ | Federal Career Transition" beats "Claims Assistant at SSA" for getting found.
